Unshaven FUE — targeted restoration without pausing your life
Unshaven FUE is hair transplantation performed without shaving the recipient area, and often with only a partial donor shave. It is the right answer for patients who cannot or will not take a full visible recovery — return-to-work professionals, public-facing roles, those with short notice for travel.
We run it as a same-day daycase.
What it is
A standard FUE uses a full recipient-zone shave (and typically a full donor shave) to give the surgeon clean visual access. Unshaven FUE keeps the existing hair in place. The donor area receives either a partial-strip shave (narrow horizontal band that lies hidden under longer hair above) or a no-shave punch extraction. The recipient area is not shaved at all — grafts are placed between existing hairs.
The trade-off: it is slower and graft yield per session is lower than a fully shaved equivalent. Most unshaven sessions cap at 1,500–2,000 grafts (vs 3,000–4,500 for a fully shaved session). For the right case profile, the recovery advantage outweighs the per-session graft limit.
When unshaven FUE is the right answer
| Profile | Standard FUE | Unshaven FUE |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 weeks of social hiding tolerated | Preferred | Unnecessary |
| Public-facing professional, no recovery time | Difficult | Designed for this |
| Top-up to existing transplant | Possible | Preferred |
| 3,500+ graft session | Preferred | Capped at ~2,000 |
| Travel return same week | Possible | Designed for this |
Same-day choreography
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 08:30 | Hairline mapped (no shave for the recipient zone) |
| 09:00 | Donor partial-shave or no-shave extraction begins |
| 13:00 | Lunch in the lounge |
| 14:00 | Implantation between existing hairs |
| 17:00 | Final photographs, post-op pack |
| 17:30 | Back to your hotel |
| +24 h | Wash visit; office return possible from this point in most cases |
Who is a candidate
- Norwood II–IV with moderate recipient-zone density requirements (capped session size)
- Existing transplant requiring touch-up density
- Professional or social constraint precluding 7–10 days visible recovery
- Healthy donor reserve, age 25+, stable hair-loss pattern
We refuse unshaven FUE when the case really requires a large session (5,000+ grafts) — the operational reality is that we cannot deliver that many grafts unshaven without significant graft-yield compromise. For those cases we recommend a fully-shaved sapphire or DHI session and discuss recovery scheduling.
Recovery
Day 0 — Procedure complete. Existing recipient-zone hair partially conceals the implantation sites.
Day 1 — Wash visit. Most patients return to office work from this point.
Day 3–7 — Light crusts; usually concealable.
Week 2–6 — Shock loss (transient).
Month 3–4 — Initial growth.
Month 12–18 — Final outcome.
The donor area takes the same 7–10 days to look unremarkable as any FUE, but the partial-shave or no-shave protocol keeps it hidden under longer hair above.
What it is not
Unshaven FUE is not a different surgery — it is a recovery-optimised execution of the same operation. Survival rates are within audit-range similarity to shaved FUE.
It is not for very large sessions. We will tell you when the case-volume exceeds what unshaven can safely deliver in one day. The 24-hour written, specialist-signed plan specifies graft count and shave protocol together.
The package
Locked daycase package: the procedure (capped graft count from your plan), daycase suite, medications, optional one hotel night with 24-hour wash visit, transfers, translator, 18 months of video follow-up. One number.
